Saana and Halti
East of Kilpisjärvi is the Saana Fell (1,029 metres), the sacred fell of the Lapps. Halti is Finland’s tallest fell (1,324 metres), located around 55 kilometres from Kilpisjärvi.
Saana
Saana is a fell held sacred by the Lapps, located on the eastern side of Kilpisjärvi. Saana’s western side was protected in 1988, as the summit section is barren and the higher slopes are home to a number of rare species of butterflies.
Halti
A true hiker conquers Halti using muscle – either by hiking or skiing. The route leading to Halti is part of the Calotte Route that travels via Sweden, Finland and Norway (total distance covered 800 kilometres). You can also reach Halti by snowmobile with a local guide. On a clear day you can even see the Arctic Ocean from the summit of Halti.
Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
The Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park has picturesque beauty. The popular Hetta-Pallas hiking route offers opportunities beyond compare, with landscapes perfect for excursions, skiing and relaxing in nature. The tallest peak of the northern section of the national park, Pyhäkero (711 m) is also Hetta’s landmark.
Malla Nature Reserve hiking trail
The Malla Nature Reserve is Finland’s oldest nature conservation area, established back in 1916. Covering an area of approximately 30 km2, the nature reserve is in just as natural a state as it was when it was founded. The trail that traverses the park from the Siilaskoski rapid water section to the Kitsiputous waterfall to the three nation intersection is the only route in the park permitted for using in the summertime. The marked trail covers a distance of approximately 11 km. There is a boat connection departing from the village of Kilpisjärvi to the Koltalahti jetty, which is only about three kilometres from the three border intersection.
