How to get to Lapland

HOW TO GET TO LAPLAND

Finnish Lapland is one of the remotest places in the world or at the centre of all activity – it depends which way you look at it. It is, however, important to know that Lapland is easy to reach from any part of the globe.

Choose how you want to travel to Lapland. You can get here by plane, train, bus, and of course by car. When at the holiday destination you can easily travel from one place to another using the local SkiBus, hire car or even a taxi.

The Lapland road networks are in excellent condition and timetables are easily made to suit your own plans. You should also remember that Laplanders will always gladly point you in the right direction. Don’t be shy, just ask!


FLYING

There are a number of daily flights to different parts of Lapland. Lapland’s airports are located in Kemi, Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Enontekiö and Ivalo . The flight times to Lapland’s airports vary between 1 and 1½ hours.

Travel destinations are easy to reach from the airports - either by bus or so-called call taxis.

BY TRAIN

There are good rail connections to Lapland from all over Finland. When travelling by train, you can even take your car along with you. The journey goes by quickly while you sleep in your private cabin or chat with other passengers.

The journey by train from Helsinki to the railways of Lapland in Kemi, Rovaniemi, Kolari or Kemijärvi takes an average of 12 hours. The journey is easily continued to various destinations from the railway stations.

BY CAR

You can also easily reach Lapland with your own car or a rented car. Once you arrive in Lapland, you can also hire a car or travel by taxi or bus.

The most direct road route from Helsinki to Lapland travels via Lahti, Jyväskylä and Oulu to reach Rovaniemi. Other popular routes include the highway joining the coastal towns of West Finland (E 75) heading north and the eastern route that goes through the towns of e.g. Lappeenranta, Joensuu, Kajaani and Kuusamo.

TRAVELLING IN LAPLAND

Once in Lapland the tranfers from destinatios to another goe smoothly by your own car, rented car, bus or a taxi. Ski busses operate in most of the ski resorts.
