Winter activities in lapland - downhill skiing

DOWNHILL SKIING

Well groomed, long slopes as far as the eye can see – Lapland is truly Finland’s most attractive downhill skiing region. As the downhill skiing resorts of Lapland include all the supplementary services, you can be certain your skiing holiday will be a great success.

Whether you seek a gentle and relaxed ski downhill through powdery snow or the challenges and thrills provided by more difficult slopes, Lapland has just what you are looking for! Each ski resort has its own downhill skiing conditions that distinctly differ from one another, providing fun for beginners and professionals alike.

Why not top off a perfect holiday by trying a luxurious ride in a helicopter to untouched fell hillside filled with powdery snow?

Telemark skiing or snowboarding?
If you are interested in snowboarding, telemark or mogul runs instead of, or in addition to downhill skiing, Lapland offers outstanding settings for these activities.

Lappish Ski Slopes
Put together, the Lappish ski slopes provide around ten kilometres of downhill ski runs. The longest slope, being three kilometres long, is found in Ylläs. No matter which Lappish ski resort you choose, you will get to enjoy at least five (Hetta’s Hiihtomaa 5 slopes) and a maximum of 60 slopes (Ylläs has 61 slopes). The ski lift certainly serves the number of slopes. You will always be able to enjoy well maintained slopes, as extreme efforts are made to keep the slopes in outstanding condition using state-of-the-art technologies. The ski centres also provide skiing instruction, equipment hire services and activity programmes.

The season lasts from October to May Day
You can start skiing downhill already at the end of October as the snow cannons guarantee snow for the first ski slopes. At the very latest, the ski slopes at the Levi resort are already being very actively used during the Alpine Ski Championships held in November. The skiing season lasts right the way through to May Day, and naturally the school’s half term in late February – early March, aptly named the Skiing Holiday, is the busiest time for the ski resorts. Due to the difference in heights of the fells, you can ski down the upper slope areas in mild conditions while the deep winter temperatures lower down can be well below zero.

You get more with the joint ski pass
Downhill skiers in Lapland can use the joint ski pass system that entitles the skier to ski at a number of different ski resorts using a single pass. The joint ski pass system is used in Pallas – Olos, Ylläs and Levi. This Lapland Super Ski Pass may be used for unlimited skiing enjoyment on six freely chosen days in a one week period. The ski pass holders have at their disposal over 60 ski lifts and 120 slopes.
