Hiking and outdoor pursuits in Lapland

HIKING AND OUTDOOR PURSUITE

Take a trip into the blossoming nature of Lapland. The best trekking terrain is often found in connection with national parks and holiday resorts. For instance, the Pallas – Ounastunturi, Ylläs – Aakenus – Levi and the three national Calotte routes are very popular. There are a number of routes to choose from of varying difficulties. More details on these can be found from the Routes section.

The hiking areas of Metsähallitus (formerly Finnish Forest & Park Service) have well maintained and marked nature trails, camping grounds, campfire spots and lean-to shelters. Wilderness and bookable cabins can be used independently, while other cabin accommodation often has to be booked in advance.

Summer Equipment
If you go hiking in the summer and you plan to stay overnight in a well equipped cabin and follow signposted routes, it is worth taking into consideration the correct clothing, not forgetting protection against mosquitoes.

When staying overnight in a tent and trekking your own routes, your equipment should include at least a map and compass in addition to the basic equipment and good orienteering skills.
