Urho Kekkonen National Park

Urho Kekkonen National Park is the place for traditional wilderness hiking, either with your own tent or by going from one open wilderness hut to another. The area has been a hiking destination ever since the 1950s. Even a novice hiker may safely venture onto the trails by staying on the well-marked day trails close to the Saariselkä resort.

After gaining more skills and experience, you can go on longer hikes that take you into the magnificent fells, broad mires and forest wilderness areas for several days. During these hikes you can use the extensive network of open wilderness huts for staying overnight, or you can use your own tent.

In the winter, the network of cross-country skiing trails around the Saariselkä resort extends partly into the Urho Kekkonen National Park. If you wish to go further into the park, you need to have adequate clothing and proper equipment for skiing off trail in unbroken snow. There are challenges available, even for seasoned hikers!
