AREA
Total coverage 98,984.3 km² (representing 30% of Finland’s total area). Land areas in Lapland account for 92,665.72 km² and waterways take up 6,318.58 km². Lapland’s administrative capital is Rovaniemi with its population of 58,856 inhabitants.

POPULATION
Lapland has a population of 184,390 inhabitants. Population density is 2.1 people/km². Lapland is home to approximately 7,000 indigenous Sámi. Lapland has around 200,000 reindeer. There are approximately 6,500 reindeer owners – reindeer herders.

Commercial accommodation capacity over 20,000 beds.
1,000 tourism enterprises, 90 of which are hotels (2006). Registered overnight stays 2.3 million, 40% of which are stays by foreigners (2008).
